EMERGENCY ALERT Sat 8:07 AM. BALLISTIC MISSLE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.
This is the alert I received on my phone Saturday morning. Followed by instructions from the Grand Wailea’s public address system “All guests – go to your rooms immediately.”
What would be your first response?
Forty minutes past before we were notified of this so-called “false alarm.” Since then every news agency in Hawaii has reported the horrific panic and chaos that incurred in that nightmare-ish 40 minutes. Heart attacks. Parents shoving their children in storm sewers. Hysteria, tear-filled phone calls to say last good byes. Horrified passengers clamoring to get on the next flight off the island.
With any threat of this magnitude, of course we should take shelter to protect ourselves and our families the best we know how.
But there is a more reliable defense.
Something more powerful – to which every child of God has access.
It’s the promise of protection from your loving Heavenly Father. Remember, your Father has assigned your own personal angels to watch over you.
We have a fail-proof covenant with God for protection!
“Do not fear, only believe.” Is the message God gives us all throughout the Bible as the antidote for every single scary situation recorded in Biblical history.
Believe what? Believe God’s Word.
It says in Psalm 119:89 “Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven.”
This is a foundational promise. It means that God’s word, once He spoke it – will never change.
Psalm 138:2 says that God honors His word above His name. The Living Translation says it this way:
“I praise your name for your unfailing love and faithfulness; for your promises are backed by all the honor of your name.”
God will never go back on His word to you – period.
So my first response in a crisis situation like we had this week in Hawaii, is to claim what’s already mine!
Our best defense – God’s protection promises.
When I read of the missile alert I immediately declared out loud:
Isaiah 54:17 “No weapon formed against us shall prosper.”
2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.”
3 Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler
And from the perilous pestilence.
4 He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
5 You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
6 Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
In the violent world we live in – knowing your inheritance as a child of God is critical. It is our best defense.
That’s why it is so important to read God’s word. It’s His love letter to you. Full of promises for you to claim for your life today. It is your inheritance.
God said in Hosea 4:6, “My people perish for lack of knowledge.”
We can’t claim what’s ours if we don’t know about it.
Don’t be like Timothy Henry Gray. He was heir to a 19 million dollar inheritance but was found frozen to death living under a bridge. Homeless, he died unaware that he was heir to a great fortune.
You have an even greater fortune than that!
To learn more about your inheritance and all God’s promises that belong to you – download my gift “70 Promises for Abundant Living.” I’ve included a whole page of promises just on God’s protection!
The way you claim your inheritance – in this case protection – is the same way you received salvation in the first place. 1) Believe in your heart 2) Declare it with your mouth. (Romans 10:10)
Think this sounds too simple? Idealistic? I’ll go into more detail on this topic in my next post. (It’s my favorite topic!)
So – there’s no need to fear. Claim the promises.
Don’t live like a pauper when you have an inheritance as close as your lips.
