The Blessing of the Lord Makes Rich

The Blessing of the Lord Makes Rich

People are constantly looking for ways to get rich quick. The magic numbers to win the lottery. The “super stock” that will produce windfall gains overnight.  Human nature wants to win big and fast.   The world tries every way possible to get rich.

But here, in one short statement from the writer of Proverbs, is the secret for winning big and getting rich in the family of God. It’s THE BLESSING of the Lord that makes rich.

The Blessing is much more than a polite response to a sneeze.  Ah Choo! “God bless you”  Or the slightly sarcastic comment that we say with a smile – “well, bless their heart.”  This Blessing isn’t what we say before meals.  It isn’t what were asking for when we pray, “God bless Aunt Mary.”

Proverbs 10:22 is referring to THE BLESSING. A specific BLESSING. If there is a specific BLESSING that includes us, and makes us RICH – I want to know about it. Don’t you?

I consider Kenneth Copeland as one of my spiritual mentors. He wrote a book entitled “THE BLESSING of the Lord”  I highly recommend it – there’s so much more to explore than what I can touch on in this post. In the front flap of the book he tells how getting revelation of THE BLESSING changed his life.  He writes, “His previous lifestyle of sin, debt and failure had left him hopeless. Then he discovered THE BLESSING. He goes on to say:

“I no longer had the mentality of a poor man. In a matter of days, that mindset was gone. In its place was the realization that I am BLESSED.”

The Blessing Makes Rich

Getting a revelation of the BLESSING has forever changed my thinking, it may very well change yours too.

In Galatians 3:13-14 it says:

Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

It wasn’t Jesus’ death but His resurrection that broke the curse for us. He took all our sins and curses on Him on the cross and died. But it was what happened next that broke the curses. He rose again defeating death and breaking every curse so that the BLESSING that God originally spoke to Abraham might be on us too!

So, what is the BLESSING of Abraham? What is the promise?

The BLESSING was first declared over Adam the moment God breathed into him the breath of life and he became a living creature. The BLESSING is what created the Garden of Eden. We’ll dig more into that another time. But let’s focus on Genesis 12: 1-3 (MSG) the first time God bestows this BLESSING on Abram:

God told Abram: “Leave your country, your family, and your father’s home for a land that I will show you. I’ll make you a great nation and bless you. I’ll make you famous;  you’ll be a blessing. I’ll bless those who bless you; those who curse you I’ll curse. All the families of the Earth will be blessed through you.”

The BLESSING shows the true loving heart of God to prosper His people.

The Blessing

We also see that God likes to show off and do what looks impossible. When God promised to make Abram into a great nation,  his wife Sarah was barren. They were both physically way beyond child-bearing years. Being barren was considered a curse. But with God nothing is impossible.

Fast forward in the story – God changes Abram’s name which means “father” to  Abraham, which means “father of many nations.” God broke the curse of Sarah’s barrenness and gives them a miracle son, Isaac. Later Abraham’s servant describes the extent of how much his master has been blessed:

“The Lord has blessed my master greatly, and he has become great; and He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male and female servants and camels and donkeys.” Gen. 24:35

Gen. 13:2 reports: “Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver and in gold.”

So now let’s go back to the promise of the BLESSING of the Lord in Galatians, chapter 3 it says in verse 29:

“And if ye be Christ’s then are you Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”

“If you be Christ’s” –  that’s the prerequisite. We “become Christ’s” by receiving the gift of salvation through Christ Jesus, God’s only son. At that point we join God’s family and have full rights as heirs of Abraham’s BLESSING! It’s our inheritance. This is great news!

Here’s just part of the description of the BLESSING found in Deuteronomy 28:2-8 (NLT)

“If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully keep all his commands that I am giving you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the world. You will experience all these blessings if you obey the Lord your God: Your towns and your fields will be blessed.  Your children and your crops will be blessed. The offspring of your herds and flocks will be blessed. Your fruit baskets and breadboards will be blessed. Wherever you go and whatever you do, you will be blessed. . .The Lord will guarantee a blessing on everything you do and will fill your storehouses with grain. The Lord your God will bless you in the land he is giving you.”  There’s even more!  Read the whole chapter.

Wow! That’s all inclusive blessing. God wants us BLESSED!

However, what about the “catch” in verse one? When I first read it I thought – “oh, I’m disqualified because there is no way I can always fully obey all the commands in the first verse” but – good news – Jesus fulfilled the law on our behalf! (I John 1:9) Jesus is our High Priest, so when we sin (miss the mark) we can go to Him and repent. He will not only forgive us but reinstate the BLESSING in our lives immediately.

So don’t let the devil put any condemnation on you and steal the BLESSING from you. There is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. (Romans 8:1)

There are many examples of the BLESSING at work in the Bible. Job, Daniel, David, Moses, to name a few. My favorite is Joseph.

Joseph is the favored son of his father.  But that gets him in trouble with his eleven other brothers, they despise him and sell him to the Ishmaelites. Genesis 39:2 describes Joseph soon after he is sold as a slave to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain on the guard.  “The Lord was with Joseph and he was a successful man.”  Really? In the natural he doesn’t look very successful at the moment!

So he ends up serving in Potiphar’s house. “And his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made all he did to prosper in his hand. So Joseph found favor in his sight and served him. Then he made him overseer of his house, and all that he had he put under his authority.” Gen. 39:3-4

But then he gets falsely accused of adultery and thrown in prison, but even there he gets promoted to manager of the prison. “But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him mercy and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.”  Gen. 39:21

All the time Joseph is believing in the BLESSING. Two years later everything changes. He is brought before the king. Interprets the king’s dream and goes from the pit to the palace overnight!  In every situation that Joseph found himself, the BLESSING was at work. Wherever he went, whatever he did, it prospered.

The BLESSING will work for you today.

So, if you want a job promotion claim the BLESSING. It sure worked for Joseph! Whatever you need today, wisdom for raising children, provision, healing, restoration of a relationship, financial increase, the BLESSING is your answer.

The BlessingDon’t accept the curses operating in your life. You’ve been redeemed from all the curses by the precious blood of Jesus. I hope that you’ll join me in my determination not to let one drop of Jesus’ blood be wasted. Jesus paid a huge price to break the curses and restore the BLESSING to us. He loves you and always wants the very best for you. He wants you to enjoy the promised covenant BLESSING and employ it every day in your life.

The way to get the BLESSING working in your life is the same way you receive everything from God. With a believing heart, speak it out loud. Your angels are listening to hear what you will say so they can go to work on your behalf. Start everyday by declaring “I am greatly BLESSED, highly FAVORED,  and deeply LOVED.”
